Working for Something or Toward Something

In today’s world most people are working for something.  People want to secure a home and a lifestyle for their families.  People want to acquire real property and have a nice savings for their kid’s college education and their own retirement.  I was having a conversation with a friend recently and we both agree that most people are taught to work for something because your education and your career are a big part of your identity.  While many well off people have their children work toward something.  Wealthy people ask their children what would they create, build or manage as enterprise in the future and then set forth the road map to making it a reality.  The average Americans tell their children education is key and landing a great position so that you might rise up through the ranks and have a comfortable life and nice nest egg for retirement is the goal.  All of the other facets of happiness you will experience along the way if you stick to the plan.  There is nothing wrong with either path because both lead to a promising future and favored existence.  If I had my druthers during my youth I would have liked to be asked about my creativity and not be drilled about the importance of education and working somebody’s job for thirty years.  It did work well for my mom and dad but aside from necessary travel, vacations were not a practice until after they reached retirement age.  I just did not have it in me to sit and do the same job or be with the same company for my whole adult life only to be bitter and not expand my horizon.  I wanted to travel while I was still a bit youthful to be able to not just see it but participate in the adventure of experiencing someplace new.  Could I officially be in retirement right at this moment, I suppose it would be possible?  The real question is would I be completely fulfilled for the accomplishment?  The answer is no I would not feel like I had a full life working for one company for all of my adult life.  I have worked for a few different industries in corporate America and I believe I am well-rounded as a result.  I run into so many people who do the same thing day in and day out and cannot understand new perspectives in business because they have not been exposed to any. Hence, these individuals would never be able to run a business for themselves let alone be adaptable to new streams of business sense.  We are doing our children a disservice if we do not expose them to an entrepreneurial train of thought.  Granted, it is not the way we were raised but it is a necessary component to have to keep our children competitive, successful and engaged as them move through life.  Working toward something checks all the boxes of personal development as well as professional success and leads to a happier journey through life.
