Walk-out Makes Sense: Youth in America have Rights Too

Youth across America are about to execute their right to protest in solidarity for the victims of Parkland, Florida. The school walk-out will occur on Wednesday, March 14th. The action is scheduled to last for a full seventeen-minutes. Sure, the disruption in the day will probably take longer but all in all, at least no one will lose their life during the exercise. It is being negated by school boards, politician, and National Rifle Association enthusiasts. The media confirms that school boards will punish members of the student body who engage from suspension to not allowing seniors to participate at commencement ceremonies this spring.

We as parents who take the time to teach our children right from wrong deliberately don’t see an issue. Of course, this walk-out will raise more awareness about assault rifle issues in America. Will it be resolved? Unfortunately, the answer is no. However, it will be a thorn in the side of political factions running for re-election in the mid-terms. Remember, according to the laws of the United States of America, you are eligible to cast a vote at the age of eighteen-years-old, and something tells me that many will rally at the polling stations come November. The time to re-enact the assault rifle ban is now.

Some may think that Parkland is behind us and we should let the dead rest. I do not know of anyone who would allow their child to die in vain without change, retribution, and resolution. The fact that children feel like sitting ducks in a learning environment pains me. They should be allowed to exercise their right to protest without persecution of any kind peacefully. I know there will probably be a few who take advance, but that happens with every vast scale situation by a small percentage.

If my student were exiting school to make a point, where the life of a classmate could be saved one day in the future, at his local high school or another somewhere in America, then I would agree. #ParklandStrong
