Goodbye to Black History Month

Black history month comes and goes so quickly. There is never enough time in a day to acknowledge all who have come before us as well as the people who contribute to the history of Black America each day. I hope that we’ve all learned a few things over the course of the twenty-eight day celebration. It’s time to say goodbye to Black History Month. I will end the month with this short poem:

Black History is Ever Present

In February, we celebrate Black History Month.

A time to honor the stories and struggles we recount.

From slavery to segregation, the road has been long,

But through courage and resilience, we’ve stayed strong.

We remember the greats who paved the way,

Like Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks, we say.

Their voices spoke of justice, equality, and peace.

And their legacy continues to inspire and increase.

We recognize the triumphs of black artists and poets;

Whose creativity and expression have helped us to know it.

From Langston Hughes to Maya Angelou,

Their words have touched our hearts and minds anew.

We pay tribute to the scientists and inventors,

Whose discoveries and innovations were true adventures.

From George Washington Carver to Mae Jemison,

Their contributions have advanced our progression.

Black History Month reminds us all,

That our history is rich and diverse, standing tall.

We honor our past and look toward our future.

With hope and determination, we’ll continue to nurture.

As we say goodbye to black history month, I hope that you found solace in the knowledge that Black Americans contributions will always enrich us. Black history is created every day, we acknowledge it as it happens, and mark the moment as a first. The goal is to run out of firsts so that black achievement is the norm and not the exception.
