8 Reason Why Resolutions Never Work: New Years Resolutions – Fad or Commitment

Funny how we always make a list of resolutions for the New Year.  Although our intentions are good, we can never keep them.  The list ranges from the very practical, like getting to work on time or eating better to the outrageous lofty dreams of, finding one’s soulmate or winning the lottery.  Many of these resolutions are made without deep reflection. We make them at the company office party or a night out drinking with friends. Often the words are uttered under duress or impulsively in response to the news of someone discovering an illness or passing away from something that could have been preventable.

We can agree that people have the best intentions and honestly believe that they will follow through. As the year begins, we are steadfast in proving that we can complete the task. Then life gets in the way and the excuses emerge.

8 reason why resolutions don’t work:

8) The goal is just too big. Many of us reach for the stars without even knowing what it takes to get there. If the goal is too big, then it will be unattainable.

7) It is not your goal. You jumped on someone else’s bandwagon so the mission does not hold meaning for you. Just because someone states something that sounds like something you need to be doing does not make you personally committed to executing it.

6) Requires a huge investment of time and money. Going to the gym requires a membership and time schedule. Many of you will not even read this whole list because time is precious and none of us have enough of it to spread around.

5) No willpower. If you decide to give up meat. You have to have the willpower to go vegan. Habits are hard to break and behaviors are just as bad. We are not willing to give up the things we love unless it’s a matter of life or death.  Many people still risk bad behavior regardless of the consequences.

4) Need a partner. We can usually commit and complete a goal with a partner. As human beings we are designed not to be alone. Our journey makes it easier to stay true rather than my journey.

3) We get hurt. In the case of a new health regimen, we often become overzealous by taking on activities outside of what we are capable. Generally, going it alone with supervision. If we sprain or fraction a bone, then pretty much that’s a wrap. Did you know that you can hurt yourself walking if you don’t use the proper form?

2) It was dare. We often rise to the occasion of a challenge until the challenger is out of sight, then that new detox is out of mind.

1) You are not serious. It was just a slip of the tongue in mixed company or in the heat of the moment.

What are your resolutions for 2018 and will you honor them?
